Getting Recognised as a Charity – New HMRC Tool

Try the new charities registration service

Yesterday HM Revenue & Customs announced that it is developing and testing a new digital service for organisations applying to be recognised as a charity for tax purposes. HMRC are running a trial version of the new service and are inviting charitable organisations to help with the trial. If you run a charity and haven’t yet applied to be recognised as such by HMRC you can take part in the trial by completing your registration details online rather than using form ChA1. Previously the form was the only method available.

After using the online tool you are invited to give feedback on using the service.

Why bother getting recognition as a charity by HMRC

Even if your organisation is already registered with the Charities Commission it is important to be recognised as a charity by HMRC for tax purposes. By gaining this recognition you can claim tax relief on income and gains, as well as claiming tax back on income received on which tax has already been paid, e.g. bank interest and Gift Aid donations.
